Definitions from the Web

Strain Gage

A strain gage, also spelled as strain gauge, is a device used to measure the strain or deformation of an object subjected to external forces. It works by measuring the changes in electrical resistance that occur when the object is strained.

In its most common form, a strain gage consists of a thin wire or foil that is attached to the surface of the object being measured. As the object is subjected to strain, the wire or foil stretches or compresses, causing a change in its resistance. This change in resistance is then measured and converted into a strain or deformation value.

Sample sentences:

  • The engineers used strain gages to monitor the deformation of the bridge under heavy loads.
  • Strain gages are often used in structural engineering to assess the safety and integrity of buildings.
  • The strain gage provided accurate measurements of the stress placed on the metal during the experiment.
