Nonrestrictive Clause

A nonrestrictive clause, also known as a nonessential clause, is a type of subordinate clause that provides additional information about a noun or a pronoun in a sentence. It does not limit or restrict the meaning of the main clause and can be removed without changing the essential meaning of the sentence.

Sense 1: Grammar

In grammar, a nonrestrictive clause is set off with commas or parentheses to indicate its nonessential nature.

Example sentence:

"My best friend, who lives in London, is coming to visit me next week."

Sense 2: Writing

In writing, nonrestrictive clauses are used to add descriptive details or additional information without altering the main message.

Example sentence:

"The novel, which was written in the 19th century, explores themes of love and betrayal."
